East Gwillimbury is a town in south-central Ontario, Canada, within the Greater Toronto Area in the Regional Municipality of York. The town was formed on January 1, 1971, by the amalgamation of East Gwillimbury Township and the Village of Sharon. East Gwillimbury takes its name from a township first settled in 1824 that was named after Gwilym ab Ieuan ab Rhys Brydydd (William Jones), a Welsh poet and bard who flourished during the 13th century. The Sharon portion of the town’s name comes from Colonel Samuel Smith, who was granted 10,000 acres (40 km2) of land in Markham Township in 1793. This land included what is now East Gwillimbury.
